The Baltimore Orioles are entering a new era on multiple fronts. Not only do they have a new manager in Craig Albernaz and a new star player in Pete Alonso, but they now have a new player development facility in Sarasota, Fla.
President of baseball operations Mike Elias spoke about the facility after it opened on Monday, per MLB.com's Jake Rill.
"It's been kind of a dream for us for a few years," he said. "It's a huge advantage for us as we train and try to get our players better. ... This is going to be the anchor of this facility, and this is one of the best. I think it's the best Spring Training setup in the state of Florida."

It has a 1,680 square foot player lounge, 1,780 square feet of classroom space, a 3,400 square foot Biomechanics pitching lab, 15,970 square feet of batting cages, a 33,430 square foot outdoor turf agility field, and more. Everything is indoors besides the turf field, so players won't be affected by the weather when they want to get swings in or throw a bullpen session.
The Orioles have made several changes since financier and Baltimore native David Rubenstein purchased the team in 2024. They went 91-71 that year before getting swept in the AL Wild Card Round by the Kansas City Royals. Then, they fired former manager Brandon Hyde on May 17 after a 15-28 start and finished in last place.
Baltimore also traded key players like center fielder Cedric Mullins, first baseman Ryan O'Hearn, right fielder Ramon Urias, starting pitcher Charlie Morton, reliever Seranthony Dominguez, and more. Over the offseason, it hired Albernaz and acquired veterans like Alonso, outfielder Taylor Ward, and starting pitcher Shane Baz.
The Orioles are not settling for mediocrity anymore. They haven't won a playoff game since 2012, and it was time to revamp the organization from top to bottom.
With the Alonso signing, Baltimore now has two star players. Shortstop Gunnar Henderson, a former All-Star and AL Rookie of the Year who is under team control until 2028, owns an .831 career OPS over 497 games. Meanwhile, Alonso is the New York Mets' all-time home run leader and is now under contract for five years.
Orioles pitchers and catchers will report on Wednesday, per FOX Baltimore. Their first Spring Training game is against the New York Yankees on Feb. 20.
