The Baltimore Orioles lost a road series against the Colorado Rockies.
The Baltimore Orioles lost their road series against the Colorado Rockies, dropping the series finale in extra innings by a final score of 6-5.
The Orioles were one out away from a victory with runners on second and third in the bottom of the 11th inning, having entered the frame up two runs.
The bullpen could not close it out though, allowing the winning runs to cross and handing Baltimore a series loss they simply could not afford given the stakes of the moment.
The defeat ruined what was an incredible start from left-hander Trevor Rogers. Across 6 2/3 innings, Rogers struck out a career-high 11 hitters while issuing zero walks and allowing just two runs, an especially impressive outing considering it came at Coors Field.
After the game, Rogers made his feelings clear when speaking with reporters.
"We didn't get the job done today. Should have won the game. We didn't. Very frustrated. We're all frustrated right now. But we've got to flush it as soon and quick as we can. We've got some really important ballgames. We've got, I don't know, 25 days left," Rogers said, per Jake Rill of MLB.com.
He added, "We've got to flush this one, as frustrating as it is, and continue to play good baseball, because we're not out of it."
After the loss the Orioles now sit at 69-71, 1.5 games back of the final American League wild card spot currently held by the Cleveland Guardians. They are not the only team fighting for that position either, with the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays both sitting at 69-71 as well.
Baltimore truly could not afford to drop a series against one of the worst teams in baseball, and a sweep of Colorado would have actually put them in possession of a wild card spot heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
For Rogers, the frustration is understandable but he has reason to feel good about his recent form. The 28-year-old has posted a 4.30 ERA with 132 strikeouts across 144 1/3 innings this season.
However, over his last 15 starts his ERA sits at a much more impressive 3.10, which is exactly the level Baltimore needs from him down the stretch as they fight for their playoff lives every single night.
This could also potentially represent Rogers' final month in a Baltimore uniform. He was acquired at the 2024 trade deadline from the Miami Marlins and posted a 1.81 ERA across 18 starts in 2025 after missing time early that year.
Whether he re-signs this offseason is a conversation for November. Getting to the postseason is the only thing that matters right now.
