The 24-year-old third baseman propelled the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 win over the Athletics on Friday with a clutch RBI single in extra innings.
As the Baltimore Orioles sat in a 2-2 deadlock with the Athletics on Friday night, Coby Mayo was the one to break it as he went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in Carlos Narváez during the 10th inning with a go-ahead RBI single.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand then sealed the matchup 4-3 in the Orioles' favor with a one-run single of his own, scoring Gunnar Henderson to put the cherry on top of a bounce-back win after the team suffered a narrow 7-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals the day prior.
With Baltimore up 2-0, Mayo recorded his first hit of the game in the third off Athletics starter Jacob Lopez, singling to right while also nabbing second for his third stolen base on the season. Encarnacion-Strand created additional traffic with a walk, but it didn't amount to anything when Leody Taveras flew out to end the inning.
Right-hander Brandon Young kept the Athletics' bats at bay until the seventh when Jonah Heim spoiled the shutout with a solo homer to right field.
Even then, the A's were not done yet as Lawrence Butler tied it up at 2-2 with a one-run single in the eighth that brought home Henry Bolte.
Colton Cowser attempted to spark a ninth-inning rally with a walk, however, he would be caught trying to steal second while Dylan Beavers grounded out and Narváez got rung up on a 95-mph four-seamer.
Still, Mayo came through when it mattered most, which would be enough for the win despite the A's responding with another run to bring the game within one.
With the win, Mayo is now hitting .216 while recording a .721 OPS and .280 on-base percentage. He has also logged 52 RBI, 24 walks and 18 home runs so far this season.
Besides Friday, the 24-year-old third baseman has delivered during other key stretches, including Baltimore's recent series against the AL East rival Tampa Bay Rays, going 2-for-3 last Saturday to help the team secure a 3-2 victory in extras.
Furthermore, Mayo went 3-for-5 against the Texas Rangers on Aug. 9, recording a single in the ninth that set up Cowser for a bases-loaded walk that scored Beavers and put the Orioles ahead 10-3.
Now that Baltimore has their sights set on the postseason, Mayo's bat will be more important than ever going forward.
He will be in for another big opportunity to contribute tonight at 10:05 p.m. EDT as the Orioles face off against right-hander Jack Perkins who has compiled a 6.68 ERA.
