The Orioles trailed by seven runs in the seventh inning on Wednesday in Detroit before coming all the way back.
The Orioles were losing 7-0 heading into the seventh inning at Comerica Park, and nothing in the first six innings suggested a comeback was possible.
Trevor Rogers had a rough outing on the mound, allowing eight hits and seven runs, and the Tigers had gotten to him early with run-scoring hits from Javier Baez and Zach McKinstry.
It looked like one of those afternoons where the team just takes the loss and moves on.
But the seventh inning changed everything.
Baltimore put up five runs with RBI hits from Leody Taveras, Jackson Holliday, and Taylor Ward, cutting the lead to 7-5.
The eighth brought two more on a game-tying triple from Coby Mayo that scored Gunnar Henderson and Drew Beavers to make it 7-7.
In the 11th, a sacrifice fly from Yohel Pozo and another Holliday RBI single gave the Orioles a 9-7 lead, but Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run homer to tie it 9-9.
Then in the 12th, Colton Cowser delivered the go-ahead single for a 10-9 win.
"Like we've been talking about a lot all year, those boys in that clubhouse are a resilient bunch," manager Craig Albernaz said after the game, per MLB.com.
The Biggest Comeback in 17 Years
The last time the Orioles came back from a deficit that large was June 30, 2009, when they rallied from nine runs down against the Red Sox at Camden Yards.
It was just the fourth time in 2026 that any team in baseball had overcome a seven-run deficit in the sixth inning or later, and the fact that Baltimore needed extras to finish it off made the whole game feel even more unlikely.
Albernaz said the game was chaotic but that his players kept battling, and the mood in the clubhouse afterward was as high as it has been all year.
Mayo was the biggest reason the comeback worked.
He went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, two walks, and the game-tying triple in the eighth that swung everything back in Baltimore's direction.
Holliday came off the bench as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and finished with two hits and three RBIs, and Cowser delivered the winning hit in the 12th after falling behind 0-2 in the count.
Cowser said he just wanted to stay patient, see the ball deep, and make the pitcher come back into the zone.
The Deadline Week Starts Now
Baltimore sits at 53-56 after the win, still three games under .500, and the August 3 deadline is less than a week away.
Where the Orioles go from here depends on whether the front office sees this group as one that can push toward a wild card spot or one that needs to start moving pieces.
Games like Wednesday's win make that decision harder because they show that this team refuses to quit, even when the scoreboard says they should have.
The Orioles had an off day Thursday before opening a series against the Nationals on Friday night.
The comeback may not fix the record, but it gave a clubhouse that has dealt with injuries and inconsistency all season a reason to believe the second half can be different.
