Baltimore has won plenty against Tampa Bay despite struggling to find consistency elsewhere in the schedule.
The Baltimore Orioles have one opponent they simply cannot stop beating this season.
Through 11 meetings with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Orioles have won seven times.
Manager Craig Albernaz was asked after Friday's 5-3 victory what explains the dominance, and his answer was refreshingly honest.
Albernaz Has No Easy Answers
"I wish there was something that we can really grab and take with us," Albernaz said when asked if he could identify why Baltimore has dominated the Rays.
"But that's what we talk about in the coaches' room, our guys are the same. They do everything the same. They work their butts off pregame. They're prepared. Mood never changes, and they just go out and play baseball and compete. And just so happens that the games we're winning right now is against Tampa."
That response captures the main frustration of a season defined by inconsistency.
The Orioles sit at 62-67 and fifth in the AL East, a record that hardly screams contender, and yet against one of the most talented rosters in the division they have looked like a completely different team.
The coaching staff has been trying to diagnose the disconnect for weeks without finding a satisfying answer.
Alonso Powers Another Win
Friday's victory followed a familiar script in these matchups.
Pete Alonso launched his 30th home run of the season, a two-run shot that powered Baltimore past the Rays and extended a debut campaign that has validated the five-year, $155 million investment the front office made over the winter.
Alonso's production has given the lineup a consistent middle-of-the-order presence opposing pitchers have struggled to contain.
The Rays entered the series once again as one of the best teams in baseball, and yet the Orioles' pitching staff held firm after the early run support while the defense turned in a clean, mistake-free effort.
It was the same formula Baltimore has deployed throughout the season series against Tampa Bay, and the same formula that has eluded them through stretches of injuries and inconsistency against much of the rest of the schedule.
Can They Capture The Magic?
The challenge is figuring out how to replicate whatever happens in these Rays matchups across the broader schedule.
Baltimore is only a handful of games out of the final wild card spot with more than a month remaining, and the talent on the roster, from Alonso's power bat to the development of young contributors throughout the lineup, suggests this team should be winning at a higher rate than its record reflects.
The pitching staff has battled injuries throughout the year, and stretches of defensive inconsistency have cost the Orioles games they were otherwise positioned to win.
Whether they can carry that into September against every opponent on the schedule will determine if this frustrating season ends with something worth remembering.
