Gunnar Henderson ranked among the top shortstops in MLB this week.
The Baltimore Orioles continue to build around one of the most talented young shortstops in baseball in Gunnar Henderson. Still just 24 years old, Henderson has already established himself as one of the most important players on the roster, blending power, speed and defensive reliability at one of the game’s most demanding positions.
As Baltimore looks to rebound after falling short of the postseason last year, Henderson remains central to the club’s plans moving forward.
That growing reputation was reinforced this week when MLB Network released its rankings of the top shortstops in MLB heading into the 2026 season. Henderson came in at No. 4 overall, placing him firmly among the elite at the position and ahead of several established veterans.
The ranking reflects not only what he has already accomplished, but the expectation that his best years are still ahead.
Henderson’s 2025 season provided plenty of justification for the high placement. He finished the year hitting .274 with a .349 on-base percentage and .787 OPS across 154 games.
He totaled 17 home runs, 68 RBIs and scored 85 runs. Although Henderson’s numbers trended down as he dealt with a left shoulder impingement for much of the year, he is expected to be fully healthy in 2026.
Beyond the offensive production, Henderson’s defense remained a key part of his value. He showed improved range and consistency at shortstop, giving Baltimore confidence to keep him at the position long term.
His ability to handle premium defensive responsibilities while still providing middle-of-the-order offense is a major reason he continues to rise in league-wide evaluations.
Already, Henderson has built an elite MLB track record, highlighted by an American League Rookie of the Year award, a Silver Slugger, an All-Star selection and two top-10 AL MVP finishes across his first four seasons overall.
Henderson also played a major role in keeping the Orioles competitive throughout the season, even as the team ultimately missed the postseason. Baltimore experienced stretches of inconsistency, but Henderson’s steady production helped stabilize the lineup and provided leadership during difficult moments.
Off the field, Henderson’s long-term future has become a major topic of discussion. The Orioles have already shown a willingness to lock up their young stars, and extension talks surrounding Henderson have naturally followed.
While nothing has been finalized, it is widely expected that Baltimore will make a strong push to secure him as a long-term fixture as the organization continues to shape its competitive window.
