Jackson Holliday had an update on his surgery.

The Baltimore Orioles received more bad news on the injury front as their disappointing season winds down. Second baseman Jackson Holliday will undergo surgery on his left wrist later this week or early next week, ending his 2026 campaign, according to Jake Rill of MLB.com. “Hopefully just go in there and clean it up and that’ll be that,” Holliday added.

The recovery timeline runs about 10 weeks. That should leave Holliday plenty of time to be ready for the start of spring training in 2027. Manager Craig Albernaz also expects the infielder back at full strength by February.

The wrist issue caps a lost year for the 22-year-old former No. 1 overall pick. Holliday opened the season on the injured list after breaking the hamate bone in his right hand during spring training. He had several setbacks and did not make his debut until May 19. As a result, he spent nearly the entire year fighting through problems in both hands.

The numbers reflect that grind. Holliday hit .229 with a .300 on-base percentage and .640 OPS across 98 games. He added seven home runs, 30 RBIs and eight stolen bases. Holliday was slightly more productive in 2025. He played 149 games and posted 17 home runs, 55 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.

Still, Holliday has now logged three seasons in MLB and has never had a stretch where he lived up to the prospect hype. Time is running out for him to prove he deserves to be a part of this team’s future. Baltimore may even consider trading him away this offseason if the right package arrives.

Joining Holliday on the injured list is catcher Samuel Basallo, whose season also came to an end officially on Wednesday due to a concussion. Basallo took a foul tip off the mask during Monday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays and later left the game.

Basallo had a promising first full season, batting .222 with a .291 on-base percentage, .696 OPS, 18 home runs and 54 RBIs.

At 78-81, the Orioles sit near the bottom of the American League East and on the brink of elimination from the American League wild card race.

They need a near-perfect finish just to stay alive. The club has already topped last season’s 75-87 mark, but they still have fallen short of expectations. The focus has now shifted to the offseason and a stronger push in 2027 with Holliday hopefully making a bigger impact.
