An MLB player shared his reason for making an Orioles decision.
The Baltimore Orioles are already seeing the value of veteran depth early in the season, as Albert Suarez continues to make an impact despite a unique path back to the major-league roster due to injury.
The 36-year-old faced an uncertain situation at the end of spring training after failing to secure a spot on the Orioles Opening Day roster. Rather than opting out of his minor league deal to explore other opportunities and likely a spot on another roster, the veteran right-hander made the decision to remain with the organization and accept an assignment to Triple-A.
“During the offseason, the Orioles showed me they wanted me back. And I also wanted to stay here. I think I made the right decision,” Suarez explained (h/t Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner).
That decision has already paid off. Following an injury to Zach Eflin, Suarez was called back up and quickly made an impact. On Wednesday against the Texas Rangers, he helped secure a win by pitching three innings, allowing one run while striking out two batters.
For a player at this stage of his career, choosing organizational stability over immediate opportunity elsewhere was somewhat unexpected. However, Suarez’s familiarity with Baltimore and its pitching staff appears to have played a key role in his decision.
Now in his third season with the Orioles, Suarez has proven to be a versatile and effective arm when healthy. He excelled across his first two years with the club, contributing both as a starter and out of the bullpen. In 2024, he posted a 3.70 ERA, followed by an even more impressive 2.31 ERA in 2025.
His 2025 season, however, was cut short by multiple injuries. Suarez dealt with a right shoulder scapular muscle strain that sidelined him for several months before finishing the year with a mild flexor tendon strain in his right forearm. Those setbacks limited his availability and created questions about his role entering 2026.
Additionally, his spring training performance did little to strengthen his case for an Opening Day roster spot. Suarez struggled to a 7.59 ERA across four appearances, which ultimately led to the organization’s initial decision to send him to Triple-A.
Despite those challenges, Suarez remained committed to the Orioles, and that patience is already being rewarded. His recent outing shows he can still provide meaningful innings at the big-league level.
For Baltimore, having a reliable veteran who understands the system and can step in when needed is invaluable. And for Suarez, his belief that he made the right decision is quickly being validated on the field.
