The Baltimore Orioles are looking to bounce back in 2026 following a disappointing '25 campaign. With new manager Craig Albernaz set to lead the way, the O's will certainly be a team to watch. Baltimore has also added veterans such as Pete Alonso and Taylor Ward this offseason, and Albernaz believes they can help lead the ball club.
"What stands out with both Taylor and Pete is they play everyday," Albernaz said, via MLB Network Radio. "To me, that's going to be the biggest multiplier effect for our position player group, seeing these guys who, day in and day out, prepare, get their bodies ready. Then go out and perform. And go through adversity and stay in the fight. That's the biggest thing with these two guys. And yes, the performance is gonna be there, right? When our guys look up at the end of the year, the numbers are gonna be what they are.
"But to have these two veteran guys that know the process each day... Now they can really show (the Orioles' young core of players) , 'Okay, this is the next step we need to get to.' Also, those two guys are just great teammates and great people."
Alonso signed with Baltimore this offseason, while Ward was acquired via trade. As Albernaz said, both Ward and Alonso often play most of the games in a season.
Ward, 32, has played in at least 156 contests in each of the past two years. Alonso, 31, has appeared in at least 154 games in each of the past four seasons -- including all 162 games in both 2024 and 2025.
Part of being a leader is being willing to be vocal in the clubhouse. Another element of leadership is the example you set. Alonso and Ward go out and play to the best of their abilities on a consistent basis. They are both guys who want to be in the lineup everyday, and that alone will impact an overall young Orioles squad.
As Albernaz also mentioned, the performance element is something that is important as well. Ward has enjoyed some big moments, while Alonso is one of the best first baseman in the sport.
Between their performance and leadership, the additions of Pete Alonso and Taylor Ward project to be quality moves for an Orioles ball club that is looking to return to the postseason.
