Orioles' Starting Rotation Gets Boost With Shane Baz Trade cover image

The Orioles made a trade on Friday.

The Baltimore Orioles acquired Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, the team announced. In return, the Rays received C Caden Bodine, OF Slater de Brun, RHP Michael Forret, OF Austin Overn and a 2026 competitive balance round A pick (No. 33).

The addition of Baz is an intriguing one for Baltimore. A former highly-regarded prospect, Baz has dealt with ups and downs in his career. The O's are hopeful that a fresh start will help him reach his true potential.

What to Expect from Shane Baz

The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher made his debut back in 2021, but only pitched in a total of nine MLB games from 2021-2022. He ended up missing all of the 2023 campaign due to injury.

In 2024, Baz pitched to a 3.06 ERA across 14 outings. It appeared he was finding his rhythm at the big league level. The Rays had high expectations for the starter in 2025. Although he was able to make 31 starts, his performance saw a drastic decline during the '25 campaign.

Baz ultimately pitched to a lackluster 4.78 ERA in 166.1 innings of work. He struck out 176 hitters but also walked 64 batters. His 9.0 percent walk rate represented a career-high.

Regardless, Baz still features a high ceiling. As mentioned, he is only 26. There is reason to believe he could make an impact in Baltimore. The O's surrendered a large trade package for Baz, but it will be worth it if he can finally reach his ceiling as a star at the MLB level.

Orioles' Starting Rotation Outlook

Baltimore has been linked to pitchers in free agency such as Framber Valdez. The O's could still look to sign another starter or two. Their current starting rotation has legitimate uncertainty.

Trevor Rogers, Kyle Bradish, Dean Kremer and Tyler Wells are other starters on the roster. One has to imagine Baltimore will sign or trade for another starter. The Orioles clearly want to compete sooner rather than later as evidenced by their aggressive trade pursuit for Baz and signing of Pete Alonso.

Baltimore's lineup will lead the way. The bullpen could also be reliable. This Orioles ball club will have a much more realistic opportunity of competing in the American League East if the rotation steps up, however.

Perhaps Shane Baz can emerge as an ace-caliber pitcher and help the starting rotation take a necessary step forward.
