Seattle secures offensive reinforcement for their postseason push as Baltimore pivots to a pitching-focused future, acquiring a trio of hard-throwing relievers to bolster their long-term bullpen depth.
The Baltimore Orioles have traded outfielder Taylor Ward to the Seattle Mariners, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Baltimore received three pitchers — Alex Hoppe, Harrison Kreiling and Brock Moore — in exchange for Ward. Moore has a 15.59 strikeouts-per-nine-innings rate in the minors this season and possesses a projectable 6-foot-6 frame. All three relievers are 24 or older as the Orioles' front office uses Ward to bolster its future bullpen.
Ward is hitting .246 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs this season. He signed a one-year deal with the Orioles after spending the first eight seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Angels.
In 2025, Ward had one of the best offensive seasons of his career, particularly from a power standpoint, hitting 36 home runs with a .792 OPS. He signed a one-year, $12.175 million contract with Baltimore this past offseason and has now been dealt as a rental to the Mariners, who are looking to add offensive production.
The Mariners are having an interesting trade deadline as they sit three games behind first place in the AL West and two games behind the final American League wild-card spot. However, there have been reports that Seattle is willing to move outfielder Randy Arozarena if it finds the right deal. They also recently traded quality starting pitcher Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox.
Ward is a proven power hitter whom the Orioles are selling low on after he disappointed during his brief stint in Baltimore. He is one of several players who have performed below expectations, including Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman and Jackson Holliday. The Orioles are currently 2½ games behind the final American League wild-card spot and 11½ games behind first place in the AL East, where they sit in fourth place.
Baltimore has multiple players rumored to be on the trade block in addition to Ward. Adley Rutschman has increasingly been mentioned in trade speculation, as reports have surfaced that the Orioles have spoken with the Boston Red Sox about the catcher. The New York Yankees reportedly passed on Rutschman because of medical concerns. He is currently on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation.
Nevertheless, trading Ward and casting a wide net for pitching prospects in hopes of finding a valuable future bullpen piece seems like a smart move by the Orioles' front office. Baltimore can afford to do so after recently extending its top reliever, Yennier Cano, through the 2028 season.
