Coby Mayo and Samuel Basallo are crushing spring training, showcasing the explosive power that promises to ignite Baltimore's future lineup.

Spring training is an opportunity for each major league organization to evaluate their players, prospects, and to shape their 26-man opening day roster. However, it's considered to be a tryout for those players who don't have an established spot on the roster.

For the Baltimore Orioles, their opening day roster is close to being finalized, as they have star power from top to bottom. Players like Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman and Pete Alonso are established MLB ready players. Even if they don't have strong spring training campaigns, they will make the opening day roster due to their experience, pure talent and leadership skills.

However, Baltimore has two players who have yet to breakout in the major leagues, but have torn up spring training and are looking like future stars in the making.

Baltimore has two players that are on the verge of breaking out in first/third baseman Coby Mayo, and catcher Samuel Basallo.

Both players have natural power and slugging ability, which is why they were such highly touted prospects in Baltimore's farm system. This spring training, both Mayo and Basallo have been displaying why they have all-star potential and why they should be on Baltimore's opening day roster.

Basallo is Baltimore's top prospect, and is listed as the 8th best prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline, and he is proving why he's deserving of that ranking in spring training.

In 35 plate appearances, Basallo has a .375/.444/.781 slash-line with three home-runs and 10 RBI's.

Basallo possesses elite power from the left side of the plate, and is widely considered as one of Baltimore's best power bats, even though he's only appeared in 31 games at the major league level.

Basallo displayed his power in a spring training game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 19, 2026, when he went 3-for-3 with two of those hits being home-runs.

Mayo has arguably had a better spring training campaign than Basallo, which is crazy to say considering Basallo has a 1.225 OPS.

In 34 plate appearances, Mayo has posted a .452/.441/.742 slash-line with two home-runs and 12 RBI's.

Mayo was Baltimore's second best prospect heading into the 2025 season, but has gotten off to a slow start in his major league career.

In 102 career games at the major league level, Mayo has a .201/.285/.349 slash-line with 11 home-runs and 28 RBI's. Mayo has significantly struggled for Baltimore, but finished the 2025 season on a high note.

In the month of September, Mayo clubbed five home-runs while driving in eight RBI's with a .301/.393/.548 slash-line.

It's safe to say that Mayo has carried his September success over to spring training, and is finally looking like the player that Baltimore expected him to be

If both Basallo and Mayo can even replicate 75% of their spring training success in the regular season, Baltimore's offense will be in very good hands.
