The All-Star catcher is becoming a hot commodity as the deadline approaches.
The idea of the Baltimore Orioles moving Adley Rutschman has gone from fringe speculation to something that’s at least being discussed in league circles — even if the timeline remains the real separator between rumor and reality.
At 29-33, Baltimore’s season has opened the door to questions about whether the roster could shift if things don’t stabilize by August. That’s where Rutschman’s name keeps resurfacing. But according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the more realistic window for any potential deal is not this summer at all.
“A potential Adley Rutschman trade is more likely a winter conversation,” Passan noted, pointing toward the offseason following the 2026 campaign.
That not only keeps the conversation alive, but it also quietly pushes it out of the immediate deadline cycle, where most contenders are already circling Baltimore’s lineup.
Rutschman’s value is still clear. After a down year in 2025, he has rebounded with a .258 average and an .811 OPS this season. That production sits much closer to his peak seasons, when he was viewed as one of the more complete catchers in the league. The appeal for rival teams remains the same — switch-hitting impact bat, advanced on-base skills and a track record of handling a rotation.
The catch is that Baltimore has already shown it won’t make roster decisions based solely on fit. It's important to note that the front office under Mike Elias has previously resisted moving players even when the depth chart looked crowded. That context matters here, especially with Samuel Basallo already in the organization and pushing his own case.
When looking into potential suitors, two teams have continued to raise eyebrows — the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees.
The Pirates aren't getting much at the plate from their catchers, with Henry Davis hitting just .143. Rutschman would immediately settle that spot, and a battery of him and Paul Skenes would be hard to pass up. Much of the same can be said for New York. Rutschman provides a clear upgrade from Austin Wells. The difference here is the quality of prospects the Yankees can offer. Elmer Rodríguez or Carlos Lagrange are names that could definitely help an Orioles rotation still finding their way.
But the discussion doesn’t get very far once control and timing enter the picture.
Rutschman is still under team control through 2027, and Baltimore has shown little tendency to move core pieces unless there is a clear organizational shift underway. Even with Basallo developing behind him, the Orioles haven't acted like a team preparing to clear the position.
