The San Diego Padres have already won the three-game series over the Athletics but are seeking to sweep Mason Miller's former team.
The San Diego Padres are just a half-game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West after knocking off the Athletics 2-0 Saturday night.
The Padres secured the series victory and managed to beat the A’s despite being outhit 5-to-2 and failing to score on a hit. It was a dominant pitching performance for the Padres pitching staff, as right-hander Lucas Giolito and four relievers combined to shut out closer Mason Miller’s former team.
Miller entered the game in the ninth and earned his 16th save of the season by striking out two batters in a perfect inning. He saved Giolito’s second win with the Padres, as the veteran righty put together five innings of four-hit ball with five walks and two punchouts.
It wasn’t Giolito’s best performance and he’d love to limit the walks, as he has now walked eight in two starts, but San Diego is 2-0 when he takes the bump. He has pitched five innings in both of his starts.
He outdueled Athletics right-hander J.T. Ginn, who lasted just 2.1 innings after struggling with command. Ginn walked six and struck out four while allowing two runs on no hits, just five days after taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Angels, a game in which he gave up his first hit then allowed a two-run walk-off home run three pitches later.
The Padres have been playing some good baseball as of late despite dropping the final two games and series against the Dodgers last week and will look to complete the sweep over the A’s Sunday afternoon.
The Padres will send ace right-hander Michael King to toe the slab against Athletics right-hander Luis Medina, who will serve as an opener.
King is 4-2 with a 2.31 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 59 strikeouts through 10 starts (58.1 innings) this season. King has been excellent for the Padres and last worked against the Dodgers, tossing seven scoreless innings of four-hit, two-walk ball with nine strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the year. He will face the following A’s lineup:

Medina is 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 14 appearances (18.2 innings) this season, and it will be his first start in the big leagues since 2024.
Medina didn’t have success as a starter with the A’s in his first two seasons with the club and missed all of 2025 because of Tommy John surgery. He will face the following Padres lineup:
