The San Diego Padres have been dominant in April and have won 15 of its last 18 games after right-hander Randy Vasquez shoved against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
The San Diego Padres are winners of three in a row, 11 of its last 12, and 15 of 18 in April to skyrocket up the standings.
The Padres defeated the Colorado Rockies 1-0 on Tuesday in a low-scoring affair that saw the only run scored on a bases loaded walk by third baseman Manny Machado in the sixth inning.
This was a pitcher’s duel through and through, and while Colorado right-hander Chase Dollander was impressive during his six-inning outing, Padres righty Randy Vasquez had the upper-hand and threw seven three-hit innings with five strikeouts to earn his second win of the 2026 campaign.
It was a one-run game, so obviously star closer Mason Miller pitched and struck out the side in this one, right? Well, Miller didn’t appear in this game after working back-to-back days against the Los Angeles Angels, but left-hander Adrian Morejon was just as electric.
Morejon earned his first save of the season, throwing a perfect eight-pitch inning with two strikeouts. It hasn’t been great for Morejon in the early going, but that performance lowers his ERA to 6.17 and his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance should help his confidence moving forward.
San Diego is looking to extend its winning streak to four games and take the series over Colorado with a win in the second game. Right-hander Walker Buehler will toe the slab for the Padres while righty Tomoyuki Sugano takes the bump for the Rockies.
Buehler has had mixed results for San Diego this season, but his last two outings have been solid. His last time out was against the Seattle Mariners and Buehler threw five innings of two-run ball on five hits and one walk while adding seven strikeouts.
The start before that was against these Rockies and he was superb. Buehler pitched six shutout innings and only allowed three hits while punching out four batters, but he earned a no-decision for his efforts. He is 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 17.2 innings.
Sugano was stellar through his first three starts, including six innings of two-run ball on four hits with three strikeouts against the Padres the last time he dueled Buehler. Sugano was roughed up by the Los Angeles Dodgers his last time out, however, and he only lasted four innings before getting pulled for allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks while fanning three.
The Padres won the game 5-2 the last time these two met but neither factored into the decision.
First pitch is at 5:40 p.m. PDT on MLB.TV and regional sports networks.
