The San Diego Padres offense couldn't score enough runs as Walker Buehler had another rough outing in an 8-3 loss to the Rockies.
The San Diego Padres survived with a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the first game of the series on Tuesday night.
In the series opener, Randy Vasquez dominated again, and he looks like the best pitcher in San Diego and one of the best in all of MLB so far this season.
The Padres then signed right-hander Lucas Giolito on Wednesday to a one-year deal, and he is expected to join the club soon after some ramp-up time in the minor leagues.
On Wednesday night, Walker Buehler took the mound for San Diego, but the former Dodgers star had another rough outing.
Buehler went just 2.2 innings, giving up eight hits with four runs and three walks as he earned his second loss of the season. It also marked the second time this season that Buehler failed to get out of the third inning, so that's a concern for San Diego.
The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Jackson Merrill drove in Ramon Laureano.
However, the Rockies scored four runs on six hits in the bottom of the second, although three runs came via RBI singles.
Kyle Hart threw 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and one run. David Morgan then threw 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, marking the second consecutive time he allowed a pair of runs.
Wandy Peralta finished things out, but the left-hander went 1.2 innings and gave up a run via a Hunter Goodman home run to extend the lead to 8-2.
Luis Campusano, who continues to excel at the plate, hit his second home run of the season, this one in the seventh inning.
The final San Diego run came in the ninth as Jake Cronenworth drove in Campusano on a groundout.
In total, San Diego had seven hits in the game, and Campusano went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and two runs scored in another strong night at the plate.
Tomoyuki Sugano pitched well for the second time against San Diego, and this time he went 5.2 innings, giving up just one run on five hits to earn his second victory of the year.
The series finale is on Thursday afternoon, and Matt Waldron makes his second start of the season with Ryan Feltner taking the mound for the Rockies, and the Padres are hoping they can win the series before taking on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
