San Diego’s bullpen depth faces a critical test as shoulder "stickiness" sidelines a key lefty, leaving the Padres shorthanded ahead of a high-stakes Game 4 showdown.
The San Diego Padres survived with a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of the NLDS, meaning the series will last at least one more day.
It was a surprising game from beginning to end, and there were plenty of big moments. However, perhaps the biggest came when Michael King, who started Game 2 on Saturday for San Diego, entered in the 8th and finished with a two-out save in historic fashion.
Padres starter Nick Pivetta went 4.1 innings, Jason Adam went 0.1 innings, Yuki Matsui threw an inning, and Bragley Rodriguez threw 1.1 innings before Craig Stammen gave the ball to King in relief.
Now, Mason Miller was shockingly placed on the paternity list due to the birth of the couple's first child, and another surprise was left-hander Adrian Morejon not being used for the second straight game.
Morejon threw two innings in the Game 1 loss, but his absence in both games has raised eyebrows.
After the win, it turns out that Morejon is dealing with some sort of "stickiness" in his shoulder, according to Stammen.
Pitching coach Ruben Niebla said Morejon wasn't injured, and both he and Stammen added that there is a "chance" Morejon can be there for Game 4.
AJ Cassavell of MLB.com said Morejon played catch on Tuesday and that the team is being cautious.
As far as Miller goes, his status is uncertain, and at this point, so is Morejon's status.
Fans also noticed that Morejon looked off during the game.
And, others mentioned that he wasn't even in the bullpen, suggesting a more serious injury could be happening.
All of that is a cause for concern for San Diego, and the hope is that Morejon can be available, to some extent, in another must-win game, which happens on Wednesday night at Petco Park.
Morejon has thrown four innings in two appearances this postseason, allowing just one run on four hits, with the run coming in the Game 1 loss.
The Padres bullpen has done well, but using Michael King for two innings, and hoping he would be ready for a potential Game 5, means the bullpen is even more limited for Game 4, especially if Miller isn't available to return.
At this point, neither of the Padres star relievers are certain to play on Wednesday.
Maybe an update will come before Game 4. Maybe not.
