The San Diego Padres offseason has come to a screeching halt ever since the signings of Michael King and Sung-Mun Song.
The Padres are still searching for some help in various areas, but it remains to be seen when, or if, they make a splashy move ahead of the 2026 MLB season.
In other news, one former Padres pitcher was traded on Tuesday evening. The Miami Marlins traded pitcher Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees in exchange for four players, as Marlins reporter Craig Mish had the full details of the deal.
"Miami Marlins are trading SP Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees. Miami gets a big haul in return. 4 players in total. OF Dillon Lewis, OF Brendan Jones IF Dillon Jasso and IF Juan Matheus."
So, four players go from New York to Miami in exchange for Weathers.
Weathers made his MLB debut with the Padres in 2021 and he ended up making 29 starts, finished with a 5-13 record and a 5.73 ERA during his time in San Diego.
However, in a very typical AJ Preller move, the Padres traded Weathers to the Marlins at the 2023 MLB trade deadline in exchange for infielder Garrett Cooper and right-handed pitcher Sean Reynolds.
Weathers was a highly-touted player, and he was a 2018 first-round pick.
In 2024, he went just 5-6 in 16 starts with a 3.63 ERA, and he made just eight starts in 2025 due to injuries, so the Yankees sending four prospects for Weathers feels like a steep price to pay.
According to Spotrac, Weathers is under arbitration control through 2028, so it is a depth pitching move that could pay dividends for the Yankees if he can stay healthy.
The Marlins continue to be active on the trade front. They recently traded young pitcher Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for three prospects, so the Marlins are surely trying to stockpile young players and turn this season into more of a youth movement.
For the Yankees, they are expected to begin the year with star pitchers Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon out due to injuries, so being aggressive and adding a cost-controlled, 26-year-old pitcher such as Weathers seems like a smart move, although the prospect haul could come back to bite them.
But, Weathers heads to the Bronx and gets to play for a team with World Series hopes after spending time with the Marlins.
