A wide pickoff attempt proved costly for the San Diego Padres, snapping their division lead against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The San Diego Padres briefly held the National League West division lead after a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park on Monday.

On Tuesday night, the lead went away quickly in a tough turn of events for San Diego.

The Dodgers won Game 2 of the series 5-4 as the winning run crossed the plate in the ninth inning.

The Dodgers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Freddie Freeman hit a home run of Griffin Canning, but the Padres answered right back as Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first against his former team.

The Padres then took a 4-2 lead as Miguel Andujar's hot streak continued.

Andujar hit a two-run home run to left field, marking the second straight game with a homer and moving his hitting streak to eight games.

Unfortunately, that was the last run of the night for San Diego, and the Dodgers scored a run in the fifth on a Shohei Ohtani groundout and Freeman added another with a solo home run in the sixth to tie the game up.

Canning bounced back with a decent outing after a brutal performance last time. He went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two of those runs coming in the first inning.

Jeremiah Estrada allowed a run in one inning, with Freeman's home run the only one. Bradgley Rodriguez and Adrian Morejon both threw a scoreless inning, but Mason Miller had an uncharacteristic ninth inning.

Miller got Will Smith to fly out but walked Max Munch. Alex Call pinch-ran for Muncy, and he moved to third as Miller's pickoff attempt sailed wide and allowed Call to snag two bases, giving Miller his first-ever error.

Andy Pages then drove in Call with a sacrifice fly, and the Padres went three up and three down in the ninth to lose the game.

It also marked Miller's first loss since coming to San Diego, although it went down as an unearned run and his ERA dropped to 0.79 on the season.

So far, both games have each been decided by one run, and both have given fans a lot of excitement all the way until the end.

On Wednesday, Ohtani takes the mound for LA (3-2, 0.82 ERA) as Randy Vasquez toes the rubber for San Diego (5-1, 2.68 ERA) before an off day on Thursday.
