Michael King could command a lucrative long-term contract after a strong 2026 season, leaving the Padres with a difficult decision about their top starting pitcher.
The San Diego Padres could face a major financial decision if they hope to keep Michael King in their starting rotation.
The right-hander could command a five-year, $149.6 million contract if he enters free agency, according to Spotrac estimates highlighted by Padres On SI.
That works out to approximately $29.9 million annually and would represent a significant investment for a team already facing several difficult offseason decisions.
King, 31, has two years remaining on the three-year, $75 million contract he signed last December. However, he can opt out following the 2026 season and return to the open market.
If he exercises that option, King would receive a $5 million buyout rather than the $28 million salary scheduled for 2027. His contract also includes a $30 million player option for 2028.
A five-year contract at his estimated market value would give King considerably more long-term security than his current deal.
King strengthened his negotiating position with an impressive 2026 campaign.
He made 32 starts, posting a 3.21 ERA across a career-high 185 innings. His 4.3 Baseball-Reference WAR also represented a career best.
He was even better in the postseason.
King recorded a 0.64 ERA over 14 innings in three appearances, including two starts. He also earned a six-out save on short rest in Game 3 of the National League Division Series against Milwaukee.
Despite the possibility of a substantial payday elsewhere, King has expressed interest in remaining with the Padres.
"This is where we started a family," King said after San Diego's postseason elimination, according to MLB.com.
King also described San Diego as a second home and said he hoped to continue his career with the organization.
The question is whether the Padres are prepared to make the financial commitment necessary to retain him.
San Diego already has major long-term contracts with Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill.
Trade deadline acquisitions Casey Mize and Robbie Ray are also headed toward free agency, while Nick Pivetta's future depends on a contract option.
General manager A.J. Preller has acknowledged other important offseason roster decisions, adding to the challenge of building another contender.
For King, the choice could come down to long-term financial security versus remaining with the organization where he has established himself as a frontline starter.
For the Padres, retaining him could mean competing with offers approaching $150 million.
