A disastrous five-run sixth inning in Denver silenced the Padres’ bats and derailed their momentum, snapping a dominant winning streak despite early home runs from Tatis and Campusano.
The San Diego Padres' winning streak was set to come to an end at some point, and that day was Tuesday in Denver. The Colorado Rockies won 9-3 despite San Diego leading 3-2 in the fifth inning.
Walker Buehler got the start for the Padres, and he went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits in another decent outing.
Wandy Peralta took the loss as he allowed four runs on four hits in 0.2 innings, and Randy vasquez finished the game out, giving up three runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.
The scoring started as Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a lead-off home run in the first on another towering shot.
It marked another home run as Tatis has three in his last four games.
In the second, Luis Campusano added another run with a solo shot.
However, Cole Carrigg had another strong game as he had a game-tying two home run, although it didn't last long as Austin Hats hit a solo shot in the fifth.
The sixth inning is where everything went south for the Padres. Mickey Moniak tripled, then he scored on a Troy Johnston double. Brett Sullivan then drove in Johnston on an RBI single, and Carrigg hit another home run, this time a three-run shot, to give the Rockies a 7-3 lead and cap off a five-run inning.
The Rockies then added two more runs in the seventh as Johnston had another RBI and Zac Veen added an RBI single, and the Padres only scored three runs despite scattering 11 hits on the night.
Padres manager Craig Stammen admitted it wasn't their night, but he isn't forgetting what this team did over the last two weeks.
“It’s disappointing when you lose,” Stammen said, via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. “Don’t get me wrong, it feels like we should win every game. But it is important to look and remember how these guys have played over the last two weeks. They have played great, and they’ve put everything on the line.”
The Rockies had lost eight in a row entering Tuesday's game, so it was a night where streaks ended on both sides of the equation.
The good news is that the bullpen got a bit of rest as Stammen used only two relievers in this game, and they need it after being used plenty over the past week.
The Rockies and Padres will face off on Wednesday in Game 3 of the series. Robbie Ray (12-8, 3.67 ERA) will take the mound for San Diego as Mason Adams (0-0, 3.38 ERA) will toe the rubber for Colorado.
