The Giants could move on from Rafael Devers, and the San Diego Padres were named as one landing spot by a Bleacher Report writer.
Things are not going well for Buster Posey as he is trying to get the San Francisco Giants back to their winning ways.
First-year manager Tony Vitello, who made the transition from NCAA to MLB, has struggled to adjust to the major-league life.
The Giants stars have yet to find their rhythm at the plate, and San Francisco is second-to-last in the National League West, and their 18 wins are third-worst in the NL as of Wednesday.
That led to a report from Bob Nightengale saying that the Giants are "trying to unload" contracts for their big-name players.
"The Giants would love to unload outfielder Jung Hoo Lee ($85 million left on his contract), shortstop Willy Adames ($161 million remaining), first baseman Rafael Devers ($226.5 million remaining) and Matt Chapman ($125 million remaining) and start over. They just don’t have that luxury," Nightengale wrote recently.
So, that leads to another question, especially regarding Devers: Which teams could make sense for the former Boston Red Sox star?
Devers hasn't even been in the Bay Area for one calendar year, but he figures to be the biggest trade chip among them, although the salary will make things tricky for SF.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report had some landing spots for Devers, and the San Diego Padres made the list.
The question here is where does Devers fit in San Diego? Miguel Andujar has done a solid job recently as the team's DH, although he is on a one-year deal.
Jake Cronenworth has played horribly, and that even led the Padres to use Fernando Tatis Jr. at second base to see if that fixes the issue.
Devers played third base mainly in Boston, but Manny Machado is there in San Diego. Devers could also play first base, and that has been mainly Gavin Sheets, although there is an argument that Devers is an upgrade, although Sheets has provided some spark this season.
Another big issue is the financials of such a deal, and Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove aren't going anywhere as they are dealing with injuries. In any situation, the Giants will need to eat a ton of money to move on from Devers, especially this early in his tenure in San Francisco, and trading him in the division would be a tough pill to swallow.
For the Padres, AJ Preller does some stunning things every season, so acquiring Devers wouldn't be that shocking considering what the GM has done during his time in San Diego.
Then again, how to make the money work in such a trade is the sticking point, and a matter of where to put Devers in the lineup.
