Padres outfield prospect Alex McCoy has displayed impressive power and speed in the Arizona Fall League after a productive minor league season.
The San Diego Padres have an outfield prospect making an impression in the Arizona Fall League with an unusual combination of power and speed.
Alex McCoy is batting .250 with a home run, five RBIs and four stolen bases through his first five games with the Peoria Javelinas.
The 24-year-old outfielder, ranked No. 26 in San Diego's system by MLB Pipeline, also has an .881 OPS and six runs scored.
But one of his most impressive moments wasn't a home run.
McCoy ripped a single with a 112.2 mph exit velocity during Peoria's game Friday, according to The Dynasty Dugout.
He also doubled and stole two bases in the game, further demonstrating his combination of power and speed.
MLB released a video of McCoy's performance Saturday, featuring his two hits and stolen bases.
The strong start follows a productive 2026 minor league season.
Splitting time between High-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio, McCoy batted .278 with 19 home runs, 71 RBIs, 31 doubles and 24 stolen bases in 123 games.
He also posted a .355 on-base percentage and .467 slugging percentage.
McCoy began the season at Fort Wayne before earning a promotion to San Antonio in August.
He continued producing against tougher competition, batting .314 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 25 Double-A games.
His physical profile also makes him stand out.
Listed at 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds, the right-handed hitter combines impressive raw power with the ability to contribute on the bases.
According to Padres Mission, McCoy tied for the organizational lead with 19 home runs and finished second with 31 doubles.
However, his offensive development remains a work in progress.
McCoy struck out 142 times in 541 plate appearances during the regular season, a 26.2% strikeout rate that raises questions about his contact ability against more advanced pitching.
Improving that part of his game will be important as he continues climbing through San Diego's system.
The Arizona Fall League gives him another opportunity to face talented prospects and work on his approach at the plate.
The Padres sent eight prospects to the fall league, including three position players assigned to Peoria.
McCoy's development also comes as the Padres face important roster decisions heading into 2027.
A recent Roundtable examination of San Diego's offseason identified the need for younger talent as one of the organization's biggest concerns.
McCoy isn't an immediate answer at the major league level, but his early Arizona Fall League performance provides another encouraging sign for the organization.
If he can continue producing against advanced competition while improving his contact skills, he could strengthen his case as a future contributor in San Diego.
