The San Diego Padres announced on Monday that they have agreed to a one-year contract with right-handed pitcher Daison Acosta.
The 27-year-old spent the 2025 campaign in the Washington Nationals organization, splitting time between Single-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. In 52 innings in the minors last season, Acosta posted a 2.42 ERA and recorded 72 strikeouts.
His best stint came with Washington’s Double-A affiliate, the Harrisburg Senators. In 30 innings with Harrisburg, Acosta allowed just three runs, enough for a 0.90 ERA. His dominant 0.93 WHIP in this span earned him a call-up to Triple-A Rochester Red Wings.
With the Red Wings, Acosta had some more trouble, recording a 4.71 ERA across 19 games in Rochester. Still, the righty out of the Dominican Republic did enough to earn a contract through the 2026 season with the Padres.
San Diego had one of baseball’s most potent bullpens last season, led by Adrian Morejon, Mason Miller, and Jason Adam. Acosta won’t provide nearly as much as these three, but he will give the Padres another option if they are faced with injuries in their bullpen in 2026.
Still looking to make his MLB debut, Acosta gets another chance, this time within the Padres organization. On a one-year deal, San Diego is taking a flyer on Acosta, who showed flashes of being an effective pitcher in the minors last season. He may finally get his big-league chance in San Diego next season.
