The San Diego Padres are winless against the Phillies this year, and they stayed that way in their sixth meeting.
The San Diego Padres dropped yet another game to the Philadelphia Phillies today, 6-4, as they got swept in their current three-game series, and they also got swept for the season series as they’ve lost six straight to the Phillies.
The game had a familiar arc to it, as the Padres didn’t hit early and came back after getting behind, but once again they didn’t have enough to finish their comeback. The starters were Lucas Giolito and Zach Wheeler, which was a significant mismatch on paper, and it worked out that way during the game as well.
The Phillies scored first against Giolito in the fourth on a walk to Bryce Harper, a single by Brandon Marsh and another single by Bryson Stott to drive home Harper and make it 1-0. Meanwhile, the Padres were getting no-hit through five by Zach Wheeler.
Aroldis Garcia hit a solo homer off of Giolito in the bottom of the fifth as Giolito he started to lose it completely, and that was the end of his day. He gave up two runs in four innings on six hits and a walk, but Giolito was once again unable to give the Padres any length in this start. The Phillies scored yet another run in that same inning via an errant pickoff throw by reliever Yuki Matsui to make it 3-0.
The Padres finally got their first hit of the day in the sixth on a flare to left by Bryce Johnson with one out, but the inning ended quickly when Fernando Tatis Jr. hit into a 5-4-3 double play.
They broke through for their first runs of the day the next inning, as Gavin Sheets walked and Manny Machado came through with his 11th home run of the season to make it 3-2.
The one-run margin didn’t last long, however, as the Phils countered in the bottom of the seventh by breaking the game open against Padres reliever Adrian Morejon. The key hits were singles by Trea Turner and an RBI single by Bryce Harper, then another RBI base hit by Alec Bohm. By the time the action was over, the Phillies had a 6-2 lead and the Padres were in a deep hole.
They did make a dent in that lead, though, as Jackson Merrill finally came through with a two-run homer in the ninth, but the Padres went out 1-2-3 after that against reliever Jose Alvarado to make the final score 6-4. They've now lost nine of their last ten games as the dropped into a tie for second with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West.
