The San Diego Padres have just under two months to punch their ticket to the Major League Baseball postseason, and their new additions will help them do just that.
The San Diego Padres are in the hunt for a Wild Card spot in the 2026 postseason.
The Padres started off the season very hot, taking control of the National League West. However, a slip in April caused San Diego to lose the division, and now the club is trying to fight back.
Entering Thursday, the Padres it at 59-56 and are 10 games back from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
The next few weeks of baseball will be absolutely crucial for the Padres' postseason dreams, as the club is just on the outside of the Wild Card race, sitting two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies entering Thursday.
In an effort to bolster its roster for the next two months, our trio discusses the moves the Padres made at the Major League Baseball trade deadline.
Lucas opens up the discussion with the addition of Detroit Tigers' Casey Mize. The righty had a 2.70 ERA with an 85-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .213 batting average against and a .99 WHIP in 86 2/3 innings for Detroit before landing with the Padres.
In his team debut Wednesday night, the former first-overall pick got lit up by the Arizona Diamondbacks and allowed eight earned runs off with nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work -- a brutal start to his tenure in San Diego. In exchange for Mize, the Padres gave up lefties Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf.
The Padres also acquired left-hander Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants. Ray has a 3.08 ERA with a 107-to-57 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .226 batting average against and a 1.29 WHIP in 122 2/3 innings pitched this season. To acquire Ray, San Diego sent righty Miguel Mendez and shortstop Joniel Hernandez.
Lucas notes that starting pitching is exactly what the Padres needed to address at the trade deadline, and general manager A.J. Preller went out and accomplished. Bob and Peter mention that they are big fans of the trades and think this is exactly what San Diego needed to do to give themselves a shot at the postseason.
With the roster set for the remainder of the regular season, Bob questions what this team's floor and ceiling will be going forward. Starting pitching was the biggest issue, with an offense that has the talent to carry the club to October.
To make the postseason, the Padres will need to outduel the Miami Marlins and overtake the Phillies or Diamondbacks with just under two months to go in the regular season.
The NL Wild Card race will be an exciting one to follow and San Diego is primed to be a team to watch following a great trade deadline.
