Randy Vasquez delivered again and Xander Bogaerts played hero with a walk-off grand slam in a 12-inning game against the Rockies.
The San Diego Padres took two out of three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates to end the road trip with a 4-2 record and bring the season mark to 6-6.
The Padres returned home to kick off a four-game set at Petco Park against the Colorado Rockies.
However, the Rockies this year are off to a hot start, and they entered Thursday winners of four straight after a stunning three-game sweep of the Houston Astros and a win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
On Thursday, Randy Vasquez took the mound and dazzled again, as he looks like San Diego's ace so far this season. Vasquez went 5.2 innings, giving up just one run via a Brenton Doyle solo home run.
Vasquez gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out eight batters to bring his season ERA down to 1.02.
Vasquez left with the game tied at 1-1, and the lone run through the first eight innings for San Diego came via a sacrifice fly from Fernando Tatis Jr.
Manager Craig Stammen tinkered with the lineup again, giving Ramon Laureano another day off, moving Jake Cronenworth to the leadoff spot, and benching Miguel Andujar despite recording three hits in the previous two games.
Stammen also put Nick Castellanos at DH and moved Gavin Sheets to left field for this game in an interesting decision, although Sheets flashed the leather in the eighth inning with a nifty play.
Bradgley Rodriguez came in and threw 1.1 scoreless innings to continue his impressive start, and Adrian Morejon bounced back with a shutout inning in relief after an ugly five-run outing in the loss to the Pirates on Tuesday.
The San Diego offense again had a cold night at the plate, registering just five hits through eight hits with Sheets recording the only extra-base hit with a double in the second inning.
The Padres showed life in the eighth inning as Tatis walked, then moved over on a sacrifice fly. However, Tatis was picked off at second base, and right after that, Manny Machado hit a single that likely would've scored Tatis.
Surprisingly, Stammen used Mason Miller in the ninth, making it the second straight non-save situation. It didn't matter, though, as Miller still dominated, striking out the side once again.
The game then went to extra innings, and Jeremiah Estrada got the ball in the 10th, but things went south. The rules put a runner on second, and Tyler Freeman hit an RBI single that scored Willi Castro to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead.
The Padres would tie it up in the bottom of the 10th as Manny Machado drove home Cronenworth with a sac fly before Xander Bogaerts grounded out to end the inning.
The Rockies would take the lead right back in the 11th as former Padre Brett Sullivan hit an RBI double to drive home Kyle Karros, and Estrada was pulled for David Morgan shortly after.
In the bottom of the 11th, Luis Campusano tied it up with a two-out RBI double that brought Bogaerts home, but Cronenworth popped out to end the inning.
The top of the 12th ended with zero runs for Colorado as Morgona allowed zero hits.
Then, Slam Diego made a return as Bogaerts hit a game-winning, walk-off grand slam to send the Petco Park crowd into a frenzy.
Finally, the bats come to life, and Bogaerts hits his second home run in three games to give San Diego its first walk-off of the season.
The Padres will turn around and go at it on Friday night with the new City Connect uniforms set to be worn, and Walker Buehler taking the mound against Tomoyuki Sugano.
