San Diego Adds Another Rotation Hopeful To Roster
Nov 3, 2026 5:27 PM

With the Padres' rotation posting a "Help Wanted" sign as the offseason picks up steam, San Diego has added minor-league prospect Luis Gutierrez to its list of possible 2027 starters.

One of MLB's worst-kept secrets as the annual offseason carnival known as the "Hot Stove League" begins to pick up speed is that the San Diego Padres will be in search of rotation help.

Reams have already been written about the starters - Michael King, Walker Buehler, Casey Mize, Robbie Ray, Lucas Giolito and Griffin Canning - who have entered free agency and will likely be toiling in a different locale in 2027, meaning that the team's starting staff will have a much different look next season.

At the same time, a cadre of MLB insiders have attempted to deduce the approach that president of baseball operations/GM A.J. Preller will take toward free-agent signings in regard to how he will fill those rotation holes, with many wondering if San Diego could be the ideal landing spot for everyone's No. 1 free-agent target, two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, late of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

That is all just navel-gazing at this point, but behind the scenes the Padres did announce a move on Monday that could indicate at least how one of their rotation openings could potentially be filled.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, they added Luis Gutierrez, a 23-year-old left-handed starting pitcher to their 40-man roster. Gutierrez would have qualified for minor-league free agency if the Padres had not promoted him to the 40-man list. He also had been exposed to the 2025 Rule 5 Draft, but was not selected so he returned to the San Diego system for the 2026 season.

Gutierrez, who is the Padres' No. 12 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and No. 24 at Baseball America, was originally signed as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela in 2019.

Since then, he has slowly worked his way through the system, with his most productive year being 2025 when he went a combined 5-6 with a 3.31 ERA in 21 starts and 25 appearances that covered a total of 125 innings over four stops, with the most significant being 13 starts at High-A Fort Wayne with a 2-3 record and 3.74 ERA.

His 2026 season was dogged by a shoulder injury that sidelined him for four months. When he was able to pitch, he made a total of 13 starts across four levels, with the bulk being six starts at Double-A San Antonio where he was 1-2 with a 4.19 ERA over 19.1 innings. He did close the season with two September starts at Triple-A El Paso where he tossed seven innings and allowed six earned runs.

Gutierrez does profile as a true starter, though one that will need to rely on guile as much as pure stuff as his fastball historically ranges between 91 and 95 mph with a mid-80s slider and upper-80s changeup that have been able to get minor-league hitters out.
