The San Diego Padres have had a tumultuous season thus far, and need to turn things around immediately if they wish to make a run at the postseason.
It's been a rough few weeks of baseball for the San Diego Padres.
Entering Wednesday, June 10 San Diego is 8.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. The Padres have only won two out of their last ten, and lost their last four series. Lucas notes that there's been a pair of shutouts at home in that stretch, cementing how bad things have gotten in San Diego. Furthermore, the club has been shut out seven times this season, sitting below the San Francisco Giants for the second-most among major league clubs.
Peter acknowledges that it's a miracle the Padres are somehow in contention in the NL West after this brutal stretch, with SD still above .500.
Lucas breaks down some of the statistics that led to this fall from grace and offers his reasoning for why the Padres haven't been able to replicate the success that was found at the beginning of the 2026 season.
One factor in the Padres' unsuccessful season thus far has been outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr.'s production at the plate. The 27-year-old hasn't necessarily been bad this year, but his singular home run is a testament to his struggles offensively. Although home runs don't win ball games, Tatis Jr. just has not been playing like himself.
Despite the negativity surrounding the Padres, our trio is still hopeful that this season can be turned around. The club has the tools to do so, with multiple players rostered that can lead SD to the promised land. Bob mentions that it is still early in the season, but time is running out. The Padres will need to act fast to reverse the damage done in May.
Moving on to what's keeping the Padres afloat, their bullpen has been stellar. The bullpen has a combined 3.14 ERA, which is good enough for the third-best in MLB. Lucas breaks down the statistical categories in which San Diego's bullpen ranks in the top 10 across the majors, which gives a great look at just how dominant the relievers and closers have been.
Ending the episode on a positive note, Lucas, Bob and Peter are all in agreement that if the Padres can figure things out, they will be a team that no club would want to face come October. Right-hander Mason Miller, Tatis Jr., third baseman Manny Machado and outfielder Jackson Merrill are all players who can dominate at their position but just need to reach their full potential soon.
