Miller, Rodriguez, Morejon, and Adam dominate, propelling the San Diego Padres' bullpen to MLB's top spot with shutdown performances nightly.
The San Diego Padres have been scorching in the first month or so of the 2026 season, and while they have a star-studded lineup on offense, much of their success is a direct result of the stellar play coming out of the bullpen.
The back end of San Diego’s bullpen is that of nightmares for opposing teams, with the nonstop barrage of names that are capable of shutting down any lineup on a nightly basis. With their many weapons available to them in relief, the Padres have been ranked as the team with the best bullpen in all of baseball on Bleacher Report’s latest power rankings.
One man has gotten all the headlines this season, closer Mason Miller, but it certainly hasn't been a one-man show. Still, what Miller’s done since putting on a Padres uniform for the first time last summer has been unreal.
Monday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs was the first time Miller had allowed a run to score since the fifth of August. Nearly nine months later, a batter finally got the best of Miller. This may lessen the amount of coverage the 27-year-old now gets, but he still deserves a shout for how rock steady he’s been for San Diego.
Through 14 ⅓ innings in 2026, Miller has struck out 28 batters while walking just 2, on his way to a league-leading 10 saves. He has managed to maintain a negative FIP of -0.36, with a 1.26 ERA and 0.56 WHIP.
Miller is certainly the deadliest reliever in San Diego and baseball as a whole, but there are several others who are responsible for the Padres’ No. 1 ranking.
22-year-old Bradgley Rodriguez has established himself as one of the game’s best young bullpen arms as he’s recorded a 2.08 ERA through his first 13 innings of the season. After impressing in his first stint in 2025, Rodriguez has seamlessly continued his performance on the mound despite being a largely unknown name before the season.
Right-hander Jason Adam’s return has also provided a boost to the Friars’ bullpen after his 2025 season was cut short. This year in eight games, Adam has posted a 1.29 ERA and 0.71 WHIP. His strikeout numbers are still working their way back up to normal levels, but he’s had no problems finding outs in other ways.
Left-hander Adrian Morejon was possibly the best reliever for San Diego last season, but he struggled to start the 2026 campaign. He’s been much better recently, however, allowing just one run in his last seven appearances. With Morejon returning to form, the Padres bullpen is undoubtedly a nightmare for any lineup in baseball.
Relievers frequently get overshadowed in baseball, but make no mistake – the Padres’ bullpen has been as important to their record as any other area of the club, if not more. They’ll look to continue their dominance in the second of three against the Chicago Cubs tonight.
