This Padres Most Amazing Stat of 2025 Comes From Fernando Tatis Jr. cover image

The San Diego Padres had some incredible stats this year, and most of them were due to the Padres’ star power, excellence and versatility. Sarah Langs of MLB.com did a pice recognizing each team’s most amazing statistic from 2025 came from right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr.

Specifically, on May 3, Tatis reached the landmark stat category of having 135 home runs to go with 100 stolen bases, and he did it in just 547 games, which is the fewest in MLB history.

What makes this stat even more amazing is that Tatis might have gotten there faster if he’d been healthy last year. He played through much of the season with a stress reaction in his right femur that was bad enough for the club to shut him down to try and keep him healthy. Tatis returned late in the season, but he was clearly compromised.

Speculating about stats like this and what might or might not have happened due to an injury usually isn’t worth much, but the other thing that’s noteworthy about this stat is that Tatis also went on to earn his second Gold Glove in right field. It’s not unreasonable to assume a third had he been healthy last year, and all of it is a remarkable testimony to how unique he is as a player.

But there is a fly in the ointment with Tatis, however. The lasting memories of Tatis that many fans will take with them from this year is his costly playoff failure, which may have cost the Padres a chance for victory in their Wild Card Series against the Chicago Cubs.

The Padres scored just five runs in three games against the Cubs, and Chicago’s ability to shut down Tatis was a big part of what happened. His overall stats for the series were a disappointing 1for 12, and he failed to hit a single home run in the series. The Cubs geared their approach to take out Tatis and third baseman Manny Machado, and they were able to do just that.

This was especially shocking given what Tatis had done in the postseason the year before, when he personally destroyed the New York Mets. Tatis hit .423 in the postseason that year, including four home runs, so the ability was definitely there to produce in the clutch. The Padres will need more power this year to get back to the postseason, and he'll need to deliver in the playoffs if he can get San Diego over the top in 2026.
