Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper opened up honestly about the team's playoff exit to the Atlanta Braves.
The Philadelphia Phillies' 2026 season came to a close on Thursday night, with them falling to the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild-Card Round.
It was a disappointing end for the Phillies, seeing the team be eliminated even earlier than a year ago. But this team had to fight and claw their way into the playoffs, with Philadelphia finally clinching a spot on the final day of the regular season.
Despite the Phillies holding one of the top wild-card spot for most of the year, this team saw a rough September stretch get to them. And in the end, Philadelphia just couldn't muster up enough to take down the rival Braves.
After the game, players and coaches looked frustrated, knowing that another season was wasted with this core group. Star Bryce Harper opened up on the playoff exit, saying that the team simply didn't do their jobs, which is to win baseball games.
The slump in September caused a lot of issues for the Phillies, mainly in how the team structured the starting rotation. Since Philadelphia had to battle to the final game, starters needed to be used in the last series of the season, limiting them for any playoff outings.
But this was the reality for the 2026 Phillies, and nothing came easy for them. After a slow start to the year, manager Rob Thomson was fired, being replaced by interim Don Mattingly.
Mattingly did well with the Phillies after taking over, but his time with the organization is likely coming to an end after this year. Philadelphia has been hinting that Mattingly is only the interim for this season, and it seems likely that he won't return.
This group has so much talent on it, but come October, the Phillies have fallen short each time. With another season without a World Series title, there could be more changes coming to the organization.
Whether this is only in the coaching staff, or even within the roster remains to be seen. But something has to change for Philadelphia, and whatever the team has been doing in recent years just hasn't been good enough to get the job done.
The Phillies made a World Series run in 2022, but the team has failed to get back to that place. It has been disappointment after disappointment for this team, and 2026 may have been the year that forces the front office to take a hard look at everything.
