Could Jazz Chisholm join the Philadelphia Phillies in MLB free agency?
The Philadelphia Phillies currently have Luis Arraez at second base, but with Arraez slated to hit free agency at season's end, the Phillies will have a question mark at the position after 2026 concludes.
While Philadelphia would surely love to re-sign Arraez given everything he has done for the club's offense since arriving at the MLB trade deadline, the Phillies may also have to explore other avenues. One potential option could be Jazz Chisholm.
Chisholm is currently manning second base for the New York Yankees, but he is headed for free agency this winter, and the Yankees do not seem eager to re-sign him.
Could the Phillies make a push for the two-time All-Star?
Chisholm recently appeared to hint at some interest in Philadelphia while speaking to Randy Miller of NJ.com.
“Me and (Phillies manager Don Mattingly) are like this,” Chisholm said, gesturing with his fingers to indicate closeness. "Me and his son, his wife … all of us are tight. I love Don Mattingly. The Phillies got (Kyle) Schwarber and (Bryce) Harper. They got pitching. They got Arraez at second base. They’re trying to win for sure.”
Chisholm played for Mattingly during his time with the Miami Marlins and made a couple of playoff appearances under his direction.
Of course, the general consensus is that anything short of a World Series appearance will result in Mattingly losing his job as Phillies interim manager this offseason, so Mattingly might not even be around in 2027.
Regardless, should Philadelphia even want Chisholm?
The 28-year-old is slashing .230/.310/.403 with 19 home runs and 55 RBI over 516 plate appearances this season. He leads the American League with 40 stolen bases, but the rest of his production has been sparse, to say the least.
Chisholm made it clear he was expecting a monster contract when he spoke about it before the campaign began, but his value has significantly decreased thanks to his down year.
Arraez has absolutely been the superior player in 2026 and seems to be the better fit for the Phillies moving forward, but there is also a chance that he may prove too expensive for Philadelphia on the open market.
It will be interesting to see if the Phils do, in fact, pursue Chisholm as an alternative solution in a couple of months.
