The Philadelphia Phillies knew they were getting a solid rotation arm when they traded for Jesus Sanchez from the Miami Marlins in December of 2024, and he more than proved that during his first year in Philadelphia.
Now, after being one of the most reliable pitchers in all of baseball, Luzardo and the Phillies agreed to a five-year, $135 million contract extension, which will start in 2027, as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Luzardo’s deal will also include a $32.5 million team option and includes a $2 million escalator for every year he finishes top-five in the Cy Young voting, as mentioned by MLB insider Robert Murray.
Luzardo said earlier this offseason that he’d be more than open to signing an extension with the Phillies because of how much he enjoyed pitching for the team, the city, and the organization as a whole.
“It’s an organization that I had a really good time in,” Luzardo said at the end of January. “I love the city, I loved where I lived, and the organization as a whole, how they treat us as players, how they treated my family.

Luzardo arguably has his best season in the big leagues in his first season with the Phillies. The 28-year-old logged a 3.92 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP while significantly increasing his whiff rate to 30.8 percent and a strikeout rate of 28.5 percent.
If the Phillies weren’t able to sign Luzardo to an extension this spring, they would've risked losing out on the left-hander next winter. Luzardo was set to become a free agent after the 2026 season, but now Philadelphia can look forward to him being a part of the organization for years to come.
In a season that was full of ups and downs for Philadelphia’s rotation, Luzardo was a stable member of the group and ended up being one of the team’s best and most reliable arms.
Luzardo earned this extension with the Phillies, and the team is hoping he's just scratching the surface of the impact he can provide the team moving forward.
