It remains uncertain what the Philadelphia Phillies plan to do with Kyle Schwarber, but it seems evident that the team will at least present him with some type of offer.
On the uncertain side, it likely comes down to what Schwarber wants to do with the rest of his career. If he's looking to get the most money, that might not be in Philadelphia. If he wants a mixture of a lot of money plus an opportunity to win a World Series, Philadelphia can likely offer him that.
Despite some of the uncertainties until everything plays out, David Schoenfield of ESPN reported in his free agency MLB offseason breakdown that everybody expects Schwarber to return to Philadelphia after his 56 home runs last season.
“Everyone expects Schwarber to return to the Phillies, coming off his 56-homer season and with his added value as one of the best teammates in the game.
“Nothing is guaranteed, however, and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is balancing a lot of decisions this offseason. J.T. Realmuto is also a free agent, Ranger Suarez is a free agent and Zack Wheeler's return is a question, plus the team in general is getting older. But it's still a team in a championship window -- if Schwarber remains in the lineup,” he wrote.
As he mentioned, however, nothing is ever guaranteed in Major League Baseball. Not only can Schwarber get a better offer from someone, but if the Phillies were to get involved with someone like Kyle Tucker, there might not be much money left to give somebody like Schwarber.
On the contrary, the Phillies don't need to go out and mess up the roster too much.
I think there have to be a few major changes, but that comes with some of the players at the bottom of the lineup, not the top hitters on the team.
One can make a strong argument that over the past few years, Schwarber has been the best hitter in Philadelphia, even with Bryce Harper right behind him.
There's plenty that still needs to play out in free agency, but I'm hoping that Philadelphia can come to an agreement soon to finalize a deal before anything unexpected happens.
