After being released by the Philadelphia Phillies, Nick Castellanos is reportedly headed to the National League East.

Nick Castellanos’ time with the Philadelphia Phillies officially came to an end at the end of last week, as the organization released the veteran outfielder.

With Castellanos’ resume and history as a power-hitting outfielder, there was obviously quite a bit of interest in him across the league. Ultimately, the veteran found a new home with the San Diego Padres, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Even though Castellanos has found a new home, it doesn’t change anything for the Phillies in terms of what the team still owes him financially.

Castellanos still had one year left on his deal with the Phillies when he was released. Because of this, Philadelphia will still be on the hook for the $20 million left on the deal, and the Padres will be paying him the league minimum of $780,000 for the 2026 season.

Before the Phillies released Castellanos to allow him to sign with the Padres, the team did its best to get something back for the veteran. In the end, Philadelphia couldn’t come to an agreement, and it was simply time to move on.

“It hasn't worked out, and at some point, you just have to say, well, this isn't going to work. We have felt that we need to get a change of scenery for Nick and wish him nothing but the best. He did a lot of good things for the organization,” said Dave Dombrowski last week

Philadelphia’s President of Baseball Operations also shared what he thinks led to the split between the two sides.

“A lot of times, when a good player has their role change with the club, it can cause some friction, and his role changed last year from where it was,” explained Dombrowski.

"I mean, [he] played every single day for a lot of years in a row. And so sometimes that can contribute to it. Sometimes, then, people have debates between themselves where they're not all on the same page. But when you put all that together, sometimes you just need to make sure that you have a change of scenery.”

That change of scenery is exactly what Castellanos gets as he heads out to the West Coast and San Diego.

The Padres will visit Citizens Bank Park to take on the Phillies for three games starting on June 2. Given the memories and effort Castellanos gave the city, it will be interesting to see what type of reception he gets from the fans when he takes the field for the first time.
