Philadelphia Phillies slugger Alec Bohm is making everyone doubt their initial thoughts.
During the first half of the 2026 MLB campaign, Alec Bohm was a pariah among Philadelphia Phillies fans.
The former first-round pick was slashing .215/.278/.354 prior to the All-Star break, which included a .426 OPS between March and April.
But after the break, things changed.
Bohm slashed .298/.365/.425 during the second half of the season, and while he only managed four home runs over 255 plate appearances throughout that span, his ability to get on base was still impressive.
The 29-year-old ended the year slashing .249/.315/.383 with 15 homers and 88 RBI, and while those numbers aren't pretty, they are surprisingly palatable considering just how bad Bohm was early on.
Then, on Wednesday, Bohm hit the game-winning home run in the top of the 10th inning in the Phillies' Game 2 victory over the Atlanta Braves, forcing a winner-take-all Game 3.
Bohm logged two hits in the affair and has gone 3-for-8 with a couple of RBI in the series overall, so once again, he is delivering.
The much-maligned corner infielder is slated to hit free agency this offseason, and the general consensus had long been that Bohm was a goner.
But now, the conversation is changing.
Is it possible that Philadelphia could actually bring Bohm back?
While the Phillies probably wouldn't want him starting at third base (or first), a platoon role is possible, especially when you take into account that he posted an .816 OPS against left-handers this season and owns a lifetime .853 OPS versus southpaws.
It's also worth noting that the free-agent pool will be very thin at the hot corner this winter. In fact, Bohm will be one of the better third basemen available.
The fact that we are even having this discussion is wild when you recall the vitriol Bohm had received during the first half of 2026. And if we're being honest, Bohm has not exactly been a fan favorite for most of his Philadelphia tenure.
Bohm has largely been a major disappointment given his draft position (he was selected third overall in 2018), so Phillies fans were fed up with the inconsistent production.
But with the Omaha, Ne. native actually stepping it up down the stretch, Philadelphia may be a bit more forgiving.
I'm not saying the Phillies should be fooled into giving Bohm a lucrative long-term contract, but if he would be amenable to returning on an affordable short-term deal, Philly may want to seriously consider it.
