The Philadelphia Phillies have received a surprising warning about Edmundo Sosa heading into the MLB offseason.
The Philadelphia Phillies will have a whole lot of critical decisions to make this winter, but you wouldn't think one of them would involve Edmundo Sosa.
Nevertheless, Sosa will be a free agent this offseason, and Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly believes he will actually be a key a name to monitor.
In a piece where Kelly identified one player every team must re-sign on the open market, he tabbed Sosa as the guy for the Phillies.
Kelly went on to explain that Sosa is not only a tremendous utility player, but also a terrific person who is loved in the locker room, so Philadelphia would be remiss not to retain him in the coming weeks.
That's especially considering the Phillies have uncertainty at both third base and shortstop, with Alec Bohm hitting free agency and Trea Turner's position being up in the air due to his defensive struggles.
Sosa played all three infield positions except first base in 2026 and also spent 32 games in left field, and he is also a plus defender everywhere he plays.
At the plate, Sosa provides a little bit of pop, and this past season, he slashed .247/.283/.429 with nine home runs and 44 RBI over 250 trips to the dish.
Historically, he owns a .724 OPS, which is actually very solid for a utility player who doesn't play every single day. In fact, two years ago, Sosa posted a .777 OPS.
You have to think Philadelphia will make a serious attempt to re-sign the 30-year-old, who has been with the team since the midway point of 2022.
Sosa shouldn't be too expensive, and given his ability to fill in at so many different positions (not to mention the fact that he batted .323 with a .942 OPS with runners in scoring position this past year), he is a very worthwhile player to retain.
Of course, the Phillies have other needs to address this offseason, as well.
Philadelphia must repair its outfield, which is among the worst in baseball. It also must fix its shoddy bullpen. And it needs to figure out what exactly it's going to do at third base.
Those holes will all take precedent over Sosa, and we'll have to see if the Phillies will have enough financial wherewithal to make it all happen.
But there's no question Philadelphia should at least make a strong push to retain Sosa, even if it will surely face some competition for his services.
