The Philadelphia Phillies have been hit with a tough prediction in MLB free agency.

The Philadelphia Phillies are entering a critical offseason in which they absolutely must make some changes after being eliminated early in the playoffs yet again, but one of their most crucial decisions will involve Luis Arraez.

While the Phillies definitely need changes, Arraez is probably someone they should do whatever they can to re-sign.

Not that Arraez lit it up after arriving in Philadelphia at the MLB trade deadline, hitting .278 with a .678 OPS, but there is no question he improved the Phillies' offense as a whole.

Plus, Philadelphia surrendered assets to acquire him, and let's be honest: the Phillies don't have a whole lot of organizational depth to begin with.

Arraez is a three-time batting champion with a proven track record, so Philadelphia really can't go wrong bringing him back. But will it actually pay to keep him?

Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter doesn't seem to think so, predicting that the Phils will allow Arraez to walk in free agency.

Now, it should be noted that some feel Arraez could land a $100 million contract on the open market. That's a lot, especially for a player who turns 30 next April and has a questionable history defensively.

But can the Phillies actually afford to let him go?

Philly's offense was a major problem in 2026. Outside of Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, Philadelphia didn't get a whole lot of production from the rest of its lineup.

And while Arraez wasn't overly impressive in a small sample size with the Phillies, he is a lifetime .316 hitter and is probably the best contact guy in baseball.

Assuming Philadelphia does ultimately keep Harper and Schwarber, it will need to have some table-setters, and Arraez is perfect for that role.

Reuter thinks that if the Phillies are going to spend on a bat, it should be an outfielder or someone at third base. But the third base market is incredibly thin (Alec Bohm might ironically be the best one available), and while Philadelphia does need another outfielder, why not both re-sign Arraez and land someone for the outfield?

Again, the Phillies need to make extensive changes to get to that next level. Because as currently constructed, it's blatantly obvious they are not World Series contenders.

So just adding one bat this offseason is not going to solve the problem. But retaining Arraez and bringing in another piece would be a good route to take.
