The Philadelphia Phillies have received a $60 million prediction on Luis Arraez.
Back at the MLB trade deadline, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired second baseman Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants, and instantly, their offense was changed.
Arraez's presence had a dramatic effect on the Phillies' lineup, and Philadelphia proceeded to play its best baseball of the season for the rest of the month.
Of course, the Phillies went into a tailspin September, but that was due to a multitude of factors independent of Arraez.
Not that Arraez individually lit it up in Philadelphia, batting .278 with a .678 OPS over 46 games, but it was still clear that his insertion into the order injected life into the rest of the Phillies' hitters.
Now, the three-time batting champion — who batted .310 on the 2026 campaign as a whole — is headed toward free agency, and the prevailing thought is that he will ultimately depart Philadelphia.
The Phillies already have a bloated payroll as it is, and they have other glaring areas to address — such as the outfield and the bullpen.
But is there a world in which Arraez re-ups with the Phils?
Jim Bowden of The Athletic seems to believe so, tabbing the Phillies as the best fit for the Venezuelan native in free agency and projecting Arraez to land a three-year, $60 million contract.
Twenty million annually for a guy with a lifetime .316 average, which leads all active major-league hitters? Not half bad.
Yes, Arraez has limitations. He doesn't have power, and his defense has been rather inconsistent throughout his career. He also doesn't really get on base outside of base hits, owning a lifetime 6.3 percent walk rate. Plus, he turns 30 years old next April.
But can Philadelphia really pass up the opportunity to bring Arraez back into the fold?
In a perfect world, the Phillies will be able to re-sign Arraez and also fill other holes, such as signing someone like Seiya Suzuki or Randy Arozarena for the outfield.
Will owner John Middleton provide team president Dave Dombrowski with the financial capacity to do so? It remains to be seen, but at the very least, Philadelphia should make a concerted effort to try and retain Arraez.
Of course, if the Phillies do keep Arraez, it would move Bryson Stott over to third base on a permanent basis, which would then likely result in Alec Bohm departing. But if it means keeping Arraez, Philadelphia can live with that.
