After laying dormant for much of the MLB offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies appear to be re-emerging as a threat to bag one of the top players on the market.
We recently heard about the Phillies' apparent interest in shortstop Bo Bichette, who would probably move to second base if he were to join Philadelphia.
Now, the Phillies have been linked to another top-of-the-line infield slugger in free agency, with Mark Feinsand of MLB.com naming Philadelphia one of the top landing spots for third baseman Alex Bregman.
Bregman is one of the best players remaining on the open market and is definitely in demand, with the Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs all been floated as serious possibilities for the three-time All-Star.
But would the Phillies be willing to pay the cost associated with Bregman?
At the onset of the offseason, The Athletic projected the 31-year-old to land a six-year, $171 million contract. Considering Philadelphia already handed Kyle Schwarber a five-year, $150 million deal, that may be bit too rich for the Phillies' taste.

However, with Bregman still available in a slow-moving free-agent market, it's entirely possible that his price has dropped enough where the Phillies could get involved.
That doesn't mean it would be financially comfortable for Philadelphia, but given that the Phillies have won 95-plus games each of the last two seasons only to get bounced from the NLDS both times, they may be willing to go a bit over budget to chase some upgrades.
Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI over 495 plate appearances with the Red Sox in 2025, missing some time due to injury.
While the former first-round pick may not be the same elite force from his early Houston Astros days, he remains an All-Star caliber player who would represent a major upgrade over Alex Bohm at the hot corner, both offensively and defensively.
Bregman certainly makes more sense than Bichette for the Phillies for defensive reasons, so we will see if Dave Dombrowski turns his attention to the Albuquerque, N.M. native.
