The Philadelphia Phillies have announced the starting pitchers for the massive series against the Atlanta Braves.
The Philadelphia Phillies are getting ready for arguably the biggest series of the year, facing off against the Atlanta Braves in a massive four-game matchup.
Philadelphia comes into this series having won two of three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks, keeping pace in the National League East. Atlanta split a two-game series with the Washington Nationals in the previous series.
But entering this matchup, the Phillies are four games behind the Braves for first-place in the NL East. So, this series could determine everything for the competitive division.
Philadelphia comes in having gone 7-3 over its last 10 games overall, while the Braves have gone 8-2. Both teams are clicking at the right time, setting the scene for what should be a fun four-game showdown.
Phillies vs Braves Probable Pitchers
Friday, September 4: LHP Cristopher Sánchez vs LHP Chris Sale
This is a matchup of two potential Cy Young candidates, with Sánchez and Sale both being some of the best pitchers in the game today.
Sánchez owns a 2.52 ERA over 28 starts this year. He has thrown 175.1 innings, striking out 202 batters.
As for Sale, he has a 2.06 ERA over 24 starts for the Braves. The lefty has thrown 144 innings, striking out 177 batters.
Saturday, September 5: RHP Zack Wheeler vs LHP Martín Pérez
Wheeler goes for the Phillies here, with him owning a 3.31 ERA on the year. The right-hander has made 23 starts, throwing 130.1 innings
In his last outing, Wheeler allowed one run on four hits over six innings against the Los Angeles Angels.
As for Pérez, he has a 3.05 ERA over 26 appearances (22 starts) this season.
Sunday, September 6: RHP Aaron Nola vs RHP Tyler Mahle
Nola will take the mound here for the Phillies, and he's been very good over his last few starts. In August, Nola posted a 2.65 ERA over six starts, improving on his entire year.
Overall, the right-hander has recorded a 4.93 ERA this season over 28 starts. Nola has electric stuff on the mound, but he's been prone to getting into trouble sometimes this year.
Opposite of Nola will be Mahle, who has a 4.25 ERA over 23 starts. Like Nola, Mahle has a 2.50 ERA over his last six starts.
Monday, September 7: LHP Jesús Luzardo vs RHP Bryce Elder
Luzardo gets the ball in the finale, and he's been lights out of late. The left-hander has gone six straight starts allowing two or fewer runs, showing signs of brilliance on the mound.
For the year, he owns a 3.02 ERA over 28 starts. If he can put together another strong outing, the Phillies could be in a good place.
Atlanta will counter with Elder, who has put together a very nice year so far. The right-hander owns a 4.11 ERA over 26 starts for the Braves.
