Coming into the MLB offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies always knew that they were going to face a lot of competition when it came to the free agency of star slugger Kyle Scwharber.
Despite a lot of teams having interest in signing Schwarber, the Phillies remained confident in their ability to bring him back. Now, they have accomplished that goal.
According to a report from ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, Philadelphia has agreed to bring back Scwharber on a massive five-year, $150 million contract. That deal could allow him to finish his career with the Phillies.
"BREAKING: Slugger Kyle Schwarber and the Philadelphia Phillies are finalizing a five-year, $150 million contract, sources tell ESPN," Passan wrote on X. "The NL MVP runner-up, one of the best home run hitters and clubhouse leaders in baseball, is returning to Philadelphia."
Schwarber's future was the first priority on Philadelphia's offseason to-do list. After coming up short with a disappointing finish in the postseason last year, now the Phillies can turn their attention to improving the roster around their core.
Throughout the course of the 2025 MLB season, Schwarber played in 162 games for Philadelphia. He hit 56 home runs to go along with 132 RBI and a slash line of .240/.365/.563. Those numbers show very clearly why the Phillies were willing to pay so much to keep him around.
At 32 years old, this could very well be Schwarber's final big contract. He has loved his time with the franchise and despite having interest in playing for a team like the Cincinnati Reds, he opted to commit the rest of his prime to Philadelphia.
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com has also reported that the Phillies have extended the contract of Rob Thomson through the 2027 season.
It has been a busy day for Philadelphia so far. With all of the rumors surrounding Schwarber in recent weeks, fans should now expect to see the team start looking to improve the roster elsewhere.
One of the biggest dominoes of the MLB offseason has now fallen. Fans will interested to see where the Phillies look next as they look to power their way back into serious World Series contention.
