Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper has made quite a demand in the event of a trade.
The Philadelphia Phillies are entering a pivotal offseason in which they have a whole lot of major decisions to make, and one of them involves the future of Bryce Harper.
Because the Phillies were just bounced from the playoffs early yet again, some have wondered if they would think about rebuilding.
Philadelphia is an aging ballclub, and it may have squeezed all it possibly can out of its current core.
So is there a possibility the Phillies could actually move Harper this winter?
Well, it doesn't seem very likely.
The general feeling is that Philadelphia is looking to reload rather than rebuild, and while speaking to the media recently, Dave Dombrowski gave no indication that he is looking to have any sort of fire sale.
So, chances are, the Phillies will be holding on to their stars.
But let's just say Philadelphia does decide to cave and try to trade Harper. How would the Phils go about doing that?
Harper has a full no-trade clause, so the 33-year-old could veto any deal he wants. That would severely limit what the Phillies could get back in a trade.
Not only that, but Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has reported that the only way Harper would waive his no-trade clause is if the receiving team extended his current contract, which has five years remaining.
Given that Harper's contract is already likely a deterrent to potential trade partners as it is, the chances of that happening are slim to none.
So basically, the Phillies will almost certainly head into the 2027 campaign with Harper on their roster, which isn't exactly the worst thing in the world.
While Philadelphia itself was an overall disappointment this past season, Harper was very solid, slashing .269/.380/.485 with 29 home runs and 87 RBI. He also led the National League with 107 walks.
Harper arrived in Philly back in 2019 and eventually took the Phillies to the World Series in 2022, where they fell to the Houston Astros.
The following year, Philadelphia made it to the NLCS, where it lost in seven games to the Arizona Diamondbacks in heartbreaking fashion.
Since then, the Phillies have failed to advance any further than the Division Series, and this year, they were bounced from the Wild Card Series.
Philadelphia's regression is why some have felt it should give serious consideration to moving some of its top aging players, but it just doesn't seem all that realistic.
