The Philadelphia Phillies must take heed of the warning signs for this potential $400 million move.
The Philadelphia Phillies are heading into a pivotal offseason in which major improvement is a mandate.
The Phillies won just 87 games and were bounced from the Wild Card Series this year in spite of owning one of the top payrolls in all of baseball, and they have lost early in the playoffs three campaigns in a row.
Things are becoming serious in Philadelphia, and team president Dave Dombrowski must answer the challenge this winter.
However, that does not mean spending foolishly.
The Phillies absolutely need to open their wallet this offseason, but wisely. They desperately need a couple of bats, and they must patch up their bullpen, too.
But you know where they don't need to spend significant cash? On their starting rotation.
That's why all of the Tarik Skubal speculation doesn't make any sense.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com was the latest to pitch Philadelphia as a top potential destination for Skubal, who is expected to bag a contract worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 million this winter.
But why?
The Phillies already have Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo and Zack Wheeler at the top of their rotation. Andrew Painter also made major progress in the second half of 2026. Yes, Aaron Nola is replaceable, but he was actually solid down the stretch.
If Philadelphia lands Skubal, you can bet it won't do much of anything else, as it's doubtful that owner John Middleton would want to cough up that type of cash.
The Phillies need to allocate their resources probably. They already have over $337 million in luxury tax commitments heading into 2027, so they can't afford to be frivolous.
Skubal would qualify as such.
Yes, the left-hander is one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he turns 30 years old next month and has already undergone three surgeries on his elbow.
You don't think that's a bit concerning?
Skubal is going to secure a long-term contract, and it's almost a sure thing that the back end of that deal is not going to be too pretty. That's especially been true for pitchers historically.
Philadelphia should be looking add getting at least one big bat for its outfield as well as figuring out what to do at second base now that Luis Arraez is a free agent. And it absolutely needs to find some relievers.
All of that will be expensive enough as it is. Throwing Skubal into the equation would be ruinous from a financial perspective, and he wouldn't put the Phillies over the top by himself.
