Phillies' Dave Dombrowski Drops Head-Turning Trade Update cover image

Philadelphia Phillies president Dave Dombrowski has revealed a major trade update before spring training.

The Philadelphia Phillies haven't done a whole lot this offseason, much to the chagrin of their fan base.

Yes, they re-signed Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, which was important. But they haven't made any truly significant additions (unless you count Adolis Garcia and/or Brad Keller).

But could a bigger move be on the horizon for the Phillies?

Team president Dave Dombrowski alluded to a potential trade on Monday, specifically when it comes to starting pitching, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Dombrowski stated that the team would be searching for depth in its starting rotation and that he anticipated "more trade activity than usual" as a result of the late-developing free-agent market.

Philadelphia lost Ranger Suarez to free agency, and Zack Wheeler is still recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome. Suddenly, what was a strength for the Phillies has become a rather notable question mark.

Cristopher Sanchez still headlines the rotation, and Jesus Luzardo is terrific when he is on, but there is no doubt that the rest of the staff is littered with uncertainty.

Aaron Nola had a horrendous campaign in 2025, Taijuan Walker is nothing more than a serviceable back-end-of-the-rotation arm and top prospect Andrew Painter struggled mightily in Triple-A last season, his first year back from Tommy John surgery.

Taking all of those thing into consideration, it makes sense that the Phillies would be in the market for another hurler, although they didn't appear to be involved on either Freddy Peralta or MacKenzie Gore last month.

The question is, where will Philadelphia turn now?

Could Minnesota Twins star Joe Ryan become an option for the Phillies? Or will a surprise candidate emerge?

Zac Gallen is still available in free agency, but it seems rather unlikely that Philadelphia would be willing to pay the cost required to nab him. Perhaps a reunion with Walker Buehler could be in the cards?

It also needs to be said that outside of Painter, outfielder Justin Crawford and shortstop Aidan Miller, the Phillies have a very thin farm system and don't have a ton of viable trade candidates, which will obviously make swinging an impact deal tougher.

We'll see what happens in the coming weeks.
