Would the Philadelphia Phillies really make this move with their top prospect?
The Philadelphia Phillies could definitely use some help with their pitching staff this season, both in the starting rotation and the bullpen.
Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler and Jesus Luzardo comprise a terrific trio at the top of the rotation, but once you get past those three, it's a crapshoot.
Jhoan Duran has been brilliant in the closer role, but the rest of the bullpen has been Russian roulette, especially when it comes to Jose Alvarado and his 6.82 ERA.
Clearly, the Phillies need some reinforcements, and while they are expected to make some moves between now and the MLB trade deadline, finding answers on the trade block won't be so easy.
Philadelphia doesn't have a very deep farm system (Baseball America recently ranked it 29th in the league), and there may not be many impressive arms available.
So could the Phillies do the unthinkable and turn to top prospect Gage Wood?
Matt Gelb of The Athletic isn't ruling out the possibility, noting that there could be a chance of Philadelphia calling up Wood in a relief role later this season.

They will look to patch holes at the upcoming trade deadline, but they will not be able to fix everything," Gelb wrote. "Maybe Wood is the centerpiece of a bigger trade to boost the club. Maybe he’s a late-season call-up as a reliever. Maybe he spends the rest of the season in the minors."
Wood has been brilliant in 2026, owning a 3.44 ERA and 12.9 K/9 over 55 innings between Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading.
Obviously, the 22-year-old does not yet have a whole lot of experience. He pitched in just one game for the Phillies last year after being selected in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft, and he has made 16 starts this season.
Philadelphia also just saw what happened when it semi-rushed Andrew Painter to the big leagues, watching as its former No. 1 prospect logged a 7.06 ERA across 14 appearances before being demoted.
Ergo, the Phillies will surely handle Wood with caution.
But if mid-to-late August rolls around and Philadelphia's pitching remains an issue, would Don Mattingly and Co. consider giving Wood the call? And in the pen, no less?
It would be an incredibly risky move. Not just because Wood is still learning the ropes, but because the Phils view him as a long-term starter. Moving him into a relief role and then transitioning him back to starting could cause hiccups in his development.
The fact that this is even a discussion, however, shows just how good Wood has been in his first full season in the Phillies' organization.
