If the Philadelphia Phillies lose Kyle Schwarber in free agency, could they seriously replace him with this player?

The Philadelphia Phillies are obviously gearing up for a potential World Series run, so the last thing on their mind right now is free agency. But it is right around the corner, and the Phillies will have some very significant questions to answer when it arrives.

Perhaps the biggest decision of all will be deciding what to do with designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who just enjoyed the best regular season of his MLB career with 56 home runs and 132 RBI, the latter of which led the majors.

Schwarber is slated to hit the open market and is sure to generate a ton of interest, and while Philadelphia is not afraid of having a big payroll, there is always a chance that the Phillies are not able to re-sign him. In that case, what will Philadelphia do?

Well, Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller has linked the Phillies to a potential replacement that will be sure to turn the stomachs of fans in the City of Brotherly Love: New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso.

"What if they fail to re-sign Kyle Schwarber, though, resulting in a void at DH to be filled by [Bryce] Harper and/or [Nick] Castellanos?" Miller wrote. "Doesn't Alonso's 158 home runs since the beginning of 2022 become the logical top target to backfill the 187 home runs Schwarber has hit during that time?"

Alonso slashed .272/.347/.524 with 38 homers and 126 RBI over 709 plate appearances in 2025. He also played in all 162 games for the second straight season, a true oddity in today's game.

There is no question that the 30-year-old will be one of the top power bats available this winter, and if the Phils do allow Schwarber to walk, Alonso would comprise a very nice replacement who would also surely come quite a bit cheaper.

Alonso owns a career .857 OPS since, and outside of 2024 when he posted a .788 OPS, he has registered an OPS of over .800 each year since entering the league in 2019. His rookie campaign was his best, as the Tampa, Fl. native slugged 53 homers — a rookie record — while recording a .941 OPS. He also hit 40 homers in back-to-back campaigns in 2022 and 2023.

Sure, the thought of replacing Schwarber with a Met will make Phillies' fans skin crawl at first, but once they see Alonso bashing home runs at Citizens Bank Park, that would all be water under the bridge.
