The Philadelphia Phillies made a series of roster moves before taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Philadelphia Phillies are on the West Coast for the first time since last October, when they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in heartbreaking fashion.
Before the Phillies prepare for their 2025 NLDS rematch, the team made a series of roster moves affecting both their position-player group and pitching staff.
Otto Kemp Option To Triple-A
For the second time during the season, the Phillies have optioned Otto Kemp back down to Triple-A.
The 26-year-old owns just a .080 average (2-for-25) and has been relegated to a bench role given his struggles at the plate.
The last time Kemp appeared in a game was on May 20. Perhaps Kemp will continue to develop and can figure out his swing at the plate. Until that happens, though, it’s hard to see him being an option for Philadelphia’s big-league roster.
Steward Berroa Promoted From Triple-A
Taking Kemp’s spot on the big-league roster is 26-year-old Steward Berroa.
This will be the third big-league team that the outfielder has spent time with over the last three years. Berrora played for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2024 and the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025.
Berroa is having a decent season at Triple-A. He owns a .752 OPS, including four home runs. What really makes Berroa an interesting addition to the Phillies is that he’s a switch-hitter. Philadelphia has been searching for some sort of production from the right side of the plate against left-handers, and Berroa has the skillset to balance out the lineup.

The roster move focused on the pitchers, with Aaron Nola placed on the paternity list.
Nola is coming off the best start of the season, logging a quality start against the San Diego Padres. He threw 6.0 innings, allowed no earned runs, issued no walks, and struck out five batters.
Paternity leave lasts up to three days for MLB players, so Nola likely won’t miss his next start.
Nolan Hoffman Recalled From Triple-A
With Nola away from the team, the Phillies recalled Nolan Hoffman from Triple-A to give the team an extra and fresh pitcher in the bullpen.
Hoffman has actually pitched in two games for the Phillies so far this season. In 3.1 innings, he’s allowed one run and struck out two batters.
