The Philadelphia Phillies may have a solution at catcher, but there is a caveat.

The Philadelphia Phillies have not gotten much production from the catcher position this season, and that has mostly been due to J.T. Realmuto.

The Phillies re-signed Realmuto on a three-year, $45 million contract during the offseason, but heading into Thursday night's action, he owned a .641 OPS on the year. That comes after he posted a .700 OPS in 2025, his worst mark in a decade.

It's clear that Realmuto is declining, and even though he is locked in through 2028, he may not have much left in the tank.

So, where does Philadelphia turn?

Well, the Phillies do not have any immediate solutions behind the plate, and Realmuto's deal will probably block them from pursuing Ryan Jeffers in free agency. A Hunter Goodman trade does not seem all that realistic, either.

But all hope may be not be lost at backstop ... at least not for the future.

Why? Because Philadelphia has a breakout minor-league catcher in Alirio Ferrebus, who is slashing .310/.363/.493 with 11 home runs and 56 RBI over 328 plate appearances in Single-A ball this season.

Ferrebus is still just 20 years and is likely a couple of years away from hitting the big leagues, but it's good to know that the Phillies may have a long-term solution.

The Venezuelan native joined the organization in 2023 and immediately flashed strong offensive potential, posting a .982 OPS across 92 trips to the dish in Rookie Ball during the 2024 campaign.

A rough showing in 2025 knocked Ferrebus down a peg, as he slashed .236/.308/.348 through 279 plate appearances between Rookie Ball and Single-A, but clearly, the 6-foot-2 prospect has bounced back here in 2026.

Ferrebus is the sixth-ranked prospect in Philadelphia's farm system and its top-ranked catcher, so the Phils could already be looking at him as Realmuto's successor.

He also could comprise a potential piece in a Goodman trade, but the Colorado Rockies do not seem overly motivated to trade their All-Star right now. They would also probably receive stronger overall offers from other ballclubs.

The Phillies may be stuck with Realmuto for now, but it might only be a matter of time before Ferrebus bursts on to the scene.
